The Cabin

by Ken Lewis

..........and then back again In the first week in April, twelve of my willing mates gathered to turn Puffing Billy 11 back over again. When I turned the boat upside down at the end of 2006, the 200 lb plus plates had not been the fitted, so safety was my priority. I even made a frame to stop the boat toppling completely, just in case. My worries were unfounded; the turn went without a hitch the safety support was surplus to requirements, although I needed the twelve just to lift the boat onto its new dolly. The decks, cockpit and interior can now begin in earnest........ Now the boat is on a level keel, I re-attached frames "B" and "D" with epoxy and screws and also completed the foredeck frame and stringers (32,33,34 & 36). The top stringer (35) is only positioned, as I want to access and fill the buoyancy area with plastic balls from Argos, which will be secured in netting before sealing the foredeck Pic 38. In the galley area, I added stringers that are not on the plans but I felt may help as support for the galley top (31). I sealed the bare inside plywood, just beyond the water line with Eposeal 300 and painted the area white Pic 39 & 40. The next job working towards the stern was the bunk/seats support (21 & 24). Almost from the outset I decided not to include the water ballast option on my Lynx 16 but go for removable ballast under the bunk/seats. The battening around the hull was fiddly to shape and fit. I thought about steaming and bending but decided to shape them from 25mm x 50mm stock. Battens (24) were straightforward to fit. The bunk/seats were shaped to fit from 6mm ply (Pic 40). The cabin sole (23) was next. Because batten (24) the bunk/seats edge came across the cabin, I had to make the sole in two pieces to allow me to lift the sole when necessary. Despite frame “C” and two other supports giving reinforcement to the sole, it bounced and bent when walked on. I made intermediate supports down the middle (Pic 41) and fixed them to (5). It seemed to take an age to paint the cabin floor, under the bunk/seat, the bilge board cases and frame “B”. There was wet paint everywhere and nowhere to put your feet. Outside the boat, I varnished the sole boards, galley top and bunk/seat.
