Adding The Frames

Adding the Frames

I have had a clear, uninterrupted run while filleting the joins in the hull. All the frames had to be planed and sanded to accept the rounded fillets, which was not a problem. Pic 16 Since the beginning of this build, I have been unhappy with the amount of epoxy I was using, so far 12 litres of resin. I decided to add 25 x 50 mm wooden battens to all the frames and glue and screw them to the hull as suggested in Selway -Fishers alternative build methods. I only needed a smaller amount of epoxy to make the joints neater. The results look sturdier, boat- like and much cheaper. Pic 17 Somewhere in the hulls construction I seemed to have lost about 6cm in its length. Considering the bottom panels are two lengths of 8 ft ply butt joined together it is impossible for even me to have got that measurement wrong! Because of the loss of length I had to re adjust and re fit some of the frames. I decided to take all my measurements from the bow, temporarily fitting frame A & B as per the drawings. frame B supports the mast block so needs to be under the mast. The double bilge board cases are also a fixed size and not adjustable. Frame D was temporarily fixed. Therefore I had to lose the 6cm in the cockpit area. Every frame was checked for alignment, and screwed temporarily in position. Pic 18 & 19Once the filleting and taping was finished, I permanently fixed frames A, E and F into their position and removed frames B, C&D and replaced the three beams. The frames and beams will help strengthen the hull when the boat is turned. Frame A protrudes above the top of the hull a tiny amount but it will be protected from damage. The next task was to add the inwales (6), a simple job of laminating two of 15x50mm battens, screwing and gluing them on the inside of the hull along the rim. Pic 20 14th July 2006
